How Long Does an SMS Verification Code Take? We Timed 119 Codes
2026-10-02
"Didn't get the code? Wait a few minutes." Every app says it, but nobody tells you how long a few minutes actually is. So we checked our own order log.
Between August 27 and October 1, 2026, customers on TempSMS received 119 verification codes on virtual numbers. For each one, we measured the time from buying the number to the moment the code showed up on the screen.
Key findings
- Half of all codes arrived within 55 seconds of buying the number.
- 92% arrived within 2 minutes, and 95% within 3 minutes.
- 99% arrived within 5 minutes. Only one code in 119 took longer (about 12 minutes).
- WhatsApp was the fastest of the services with enough data, with a typical wait of 44 seconds.
Keep in mind that this clock starts when you buy the number, not when you tap "Send code". It includes the time you spend copying the number into the app, so the real wait after requesting the code is even shorter.
How long the codes took
| Time after buying the number | Share of codes received |
|---|---|
| 30 seconds | 15% |
| 1 minute | 60% |
| 2 minutes | 92% |
| 3 minutes | 95% |
| 5 minutes | 99% |
The middle half of all codes arrived between 36 and 75 seconds. In practice, the code either arrives in the first two minutes, or it usually doesn't arrive at all.
By service
Only services with at least 3 delivered codes are listed. Small samples swing a lot, so treat these as a rough guide.
| Service | Codes measured | Typical wait |
|---|---|---|
| 71 | 44 seconds | |
| Tinder | 18 | 61 seconds |
| Signal | 13 | 75 seconds |
| iFood | 4 | 76 seconds |
| Telegram | 3 | 75 seconds |
| Discord | 3 | 53 seconds |
When to stop waiting
Based on these numbers, here's a simple rule:
- 0 to 2 minutes: wait. Most codes land here.
- 2 to 5 minutes: it can still come, but the odds are dropping fast. Don't request the code again and again, because some apps put the number on a cooldown when you do.
- After 5 minutes: move on. Cancel the number and try another one, ideally from a different country.
On TempSMS, a number that hasn't received anything after 5 minutes is cancelled automatically and the balance goes back to your wallet, so you never pay for a code that didn't come.
Why some codes never arrive
A slow code and a missing code are usually two different problems. Codes that arrive tend to arrive fast. When nothing shows up, the app has usually refused the number quietly, because the number range has a bad reputation, it looks like a VoIP line, or it was used for a sign-up recently. Waiting longer doesn't fix any of these. A different number does.
We wrote a separate guide on what to do when the verification code doesn't arrive, and for WhatsApp specifically, our delivery rates by country show which countries work best.
Methodology
- Source: TempSMS order log, all services, August 27 to October 1, 2026.
- Only orders where a code was actually delivered are timed (119 codes).
- The time is measured from the purchase of the number to the moment the SMS was received by our system.
- Automated test accounts that never received codes are excluded.
FAQ
How long does an SMS verification code usually take?
In our data, half of the codes arrived within 55 seconds of buying the number and 92% within 2 minutes. Counting from the moment you tap "Send code", it's usually faster.
How long should I wait before requesting a new code?
Give it about 2 minutes. If nothing arrives after 5 minutes, the code most likely isn't coming, and switching to a new number works better than requesting it again.
Why is my verification code taking so long?
Usually it isn't slow, it was refused. Apps quietly reject numbers with a bad reputation or that look like VoIP lines. A fresh number from a different country is the fastest fix.
Do I pay if the code never arrives?
Not on TempSMS. After 5 minutes without an SMS, the number is cancelled and the money goes back to your balance automatically.
