Can You Use WhatsApp With a Number From Another Country? Our Data Says Yes
2026-10-05
When people buy a virtual number for WhatsApp, most of them pick their own country first. Someone in France picks France, someone in Germany picks Germany. It feels safer. Our order data says it usually isn't.
Between August 27 and October 5, 2026, customers on TempSMS bought 790 WhatsApp numbers from dozens of countries. We grouped them by region and compared how often the WhatsApp code actually arrived, and what each number cost.
Key findings
- WhatsApp works with a number from any country. Where you live doesn't matter. The number is only used to register the account once.
- European numbers cost about five times more than US numbers ($2.29 on average vs $0.44) and delivered codes less often (10% vs 13%).
- The best countries were in Latin America. Brazil delivered on 31% of numbers and Colombia on 27%, more than double the overall average.
- Picking by delivery rate instead of by home country saves both money and attempts.
Delivery rate by region

Will a foreign number cause problems?
For everyday use, no. A few things are worth knowing before you choose:
- Your contacts will see the country code. A friend in Paris will see a +57 or +55 number. If that matters for work, keep that in mind, or use the number only for a second account.
- WhatsApp runs over the internet. Messages and calls work the same wherever you are. You don't need to be in that country or keep a SIM from it.
- The number is your login. If you reinstall WhatsApp or switch phones, it may ask for a new code. A one-time number can't receive one later, so turn on two-step verification (Settings > Account > Two-step verification) and add an email right after you register.
How to pick a country
- Start with a country near the top of the table above, not with your own country.
- Buy the number, enter it in WhatsApp, and wait up to about two minutes. In our data, 92% of codes arrive within 2 minutes.
- If nothing arrives, cancel and switch to a different country instead of retrying the same one. On TempSMS, a number that doesn't receive the code is refunded to your balance automatically.
Methodology
- Source: TempSMS order log, WhatsApp orders from August 27 to October 5, 2026.
- Only numbers that were actually issued and either received a code or were cancelled or expired are counted.
- Automated test accounts that never tried to receive codes are excluded.
- Average prices are what customers paid, in US dollars.
FAQ
Can I use WhatsApp with a number from another country?
Yes. WhatsApp only uses the number to register and identify your account. It works the same no matter where you live or travel, and you don't need a SIM from that country.
Is it better to get a WhatsApp number from my own country?
Not necessarily. In our data, European numbers cost about five times more than US numbers and delivered codes less often. Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines and South Africa delivered best.
Will people know my number is from another country?
They'll see the country code, for example +55 or +57. Nothing else changes in how chats, calls or groups work.
What happens if the WhatsApp code doesn't arrive?
On TempSMS, the number is cancelled and the price goes back to your balance automatically, so you can try another country at no extra cost.
